The chasen or bamboo whisk is a traditional Japanese accessory used is used to dissolve matcha green tea. Meticulously crafted, it consists of 100 delicate and flexible bamboo whisk strands that completely dissolve the matcha powder and whip it into a foam that maximises its umami flavour.
The bamboo whisk has traditionally been used because of the ease and flexibility of the bamboo whisking strands to dissolve matcha optimally. Matcha can also be dissolved quickly and easily with an electric whisk. However, to fully appreciate the flavour of matcha, we recommend a chasen whisk.
In order to whisk and dissolve matcha tea correctly, we recommend that the chasen has at least 80 whisk strands. Our bamboo whisk has 100 whisk strands to ensure optimal dissolution, eliminate lumps and make the matcha foam as firm and compact as possible.
Maintenance:
- To clean the chasen, fill the chawan (or bowl you normally use to drink matcha) with hot water and whisk the water as if you were preparing matcha tea.
- Examine the whisk to check for there are any green spots left, and if it is already clean, shake it lightly to remove any water that may remain inside.
- It is not suitable for washing in the dishwasher.
- We recommend moistening the chasen in hot water before each use to improve its elasticity and increase the life of this accessory.
- After each use, clean with water and leave to dry, then store in a cool, dry place.
How to use:
When you receive your chasen and are going to use it for the first time, fill a bowl with hot water and insert the whisk into the bowl for a few seconds. Gradually, the centre of the bamboo will open up.
